Prima Materia Pictures is an international boutique production company founded in Chicago, IL by filmmakers Linh Tran, Hannah Schierbeek, and Don Josephus Raphael Eblahan. The company works with films that push global boundaries through the cinematic language - connecting stories from diverse cultures and unsung voices and bringing them together to create a body of work that encompasses the complexity of the world around us. Gravitating towards personal, cutting, and stylistically refreshing approaches to the filmmaking, Prima Materia aims to develop and create stories that urge hearts and souls to participate with the culture of cinema and the world around them. Prima Materia Pictures has produced several award-winning films having World Premieres in acclaimed festivals such as Sundance Film Festival, Clermont-Ferrand International Film Festival, BFI Future Film Festival, and many more. It has several projects in-development, both for short and feature films.
Born and raised in Vietnam, Linh Tran moved to the United States to pursue her higher education in 2013. Starting out in theater acting, she went on to direct and edit films. Linh’s editing spans across multiple genres. Her directing works, which include both documentary and fiction films, are deeply personal, exploring memories of childhood and early adulthood. Linh's films have been selected by Dublin International Film Festival, One Country One Film - Apchat-Issoire International Film Festival, Bushwick Film Festival, Indy Shorts International Film Festival, Cordillera International Film Festival, Pittsburgh Shorts Film Festival, Berlin Lift-off Film Festival and Omeleto.
Hannah Schierbeek (b.1997) is Midwest-based director and producer. Schierbeek’s work examines intimate interpersonal tensions, identity, and socio-ecological dilemmas, often exploring vérité techniques with a surreal cadence. Her directing debut, An Alternative Method (USA, 2020), premiered at the 2021 BFI Future Film Festival. In 2020, she produced Hilum (Philippines, 2020), which premiered at the 2021 Festival du Court Métrage de Clermont-Ferrand, where it won the Student Prize. In 2021, she produced The Headhunter’s Daughter (Philippines, 2021) that premiered and won the Grand Jury Prize for Short Film at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival.
DON JOSEPHUS RAPHAEL EBLAHAN
Don Josephus Raphael Eblahan (b.1996, Philippines) is an independent film writer/director born of Ifugao and Visayan descent.
Known for films such as Umbilical Cord to Heaven, Hilum, and The Headhunter's Daughter, his works have been selected in various film festivals around the world such as: Sundance Film Festival, Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, Toronto Reel Asian Film Festival, and Clermont-Ferrand International Film Festival, where he won the International Student Jury Prize as well as the Special Mention of the International Jury for his film Hilum. In 2022, Eblahan was awarded the Grand Jury Prize for Short Film at the Sundance Film Festival for his film, The Headhunter's Daughter.
